Different From the Others (Richard Oswald, 1919) | In collaboration with Queer Wave and Goethe-Institut Zypern
Duration: 50'
Richard Oswald’s landmark silent film Different From the Others (1919) is reimagined through a new musical lens.
Two male musicians fall in love, but blackmail and scandal makes the affair take a tragic turn. One of the first gay-themed films in the history of cinema, Different from the Others was banned at the time of its release, later burned by the Nazis and was believed lost for more than forty years. Using recently discovered film segments, still photos and censorship documents from various archives, Filmmuseum München has resurrected this truly groundbreaking silent film.
Using works by mostly contemporary queer artists, a DJ set and sound collage is crafted that bridges the 106 years separating the film from the present moment.
A sensory experience that connects cinema and sound, revealing how the emotions and struggles of the queer community still resonate powerfully — then and now.
